I also had some problems with this because I created the application in my developer account. I had to create an application using my clients Instagram account and then it worked.
The administrator has disabled public write access.

When I click on "get instagram information" I am greeted with a 404 page category not found.

How can I work out this information?

This was because of Admin Tools .htaccess maker. I allowed direct access to these files

modules/mod_jo_responsive_instagram_photo_gallery/elements/instagram.php

Actually this does not work. I get error 400 from Instagram so I cannot find my client token. And I can't find my Instagram ID anymore because they do not allow you to search via the website you suggested. They have changed a lot of things.
